PSILOCYBE SUBAERUGINOSA

Though this mushroom and Psilocybe subaeruginascens have similar appearing names, they are not the same mushroom. This species is widely distributed in many parts of Australia, and it has another close relative, Psilocybe cyanescens.130 Like its relative, P. subaeruginosa is a potent psilocybin producer. It is found only in the areas of Australia and Tasmania, and usually in forest areas, especially eucalyptus groves. Some mycologists believe that this species is actually a new introduction to the region, while others identify it as closely related to other mushrooms indigenous to the region like Psilocybe australiana, Psilocybe eucalypta, and Psilocybe tasmaniana.131 The species name comes from the feminine Latin aeruginosa, and it is used to describe the green oxidation of copper that is similar in color to the bluing of these mushrooms when handled or injured. This mushroom has been described as moderate to strongly potent. The measured psilocybin (0.45–1.93%) content ranges from moderate to very high.132
